MORAVIAN FALLS -- Starmount could have jumbled up the Mountain Valley 2A boys soccer standings Monday night, but the Rams couldn't hold a 2-0 lead at Wilkes Central.

The Eagles rallied back for a 4-2 win on their home field. The result leaves Forbush and Wilkes Central still tied for the MVAC lead with one loss apiece. Starmount dropped to 2-3 in the league and 6-5 overall.

The Rams came out aggressive in Monday's clash, playing what coach Dale Draughn calls signature "Starmount soccer" in the early going. Mauricio Lopez netted a shot with 26:17 left in the first half, then assisted a goal scored by his brother, Juan Lopez, three minutes later.

"We set out what we wanted to do is score early, but the two goals were not enough," coach Draughn said.

Wilkes Central pulled within 2-1 by halftime, getting a goal from Marco Sanchez with 10:56 left in the half.

"Both teams had their opportunities to score other goals but both defenses came up big and did things that do not show up on the stat sheets," Draughn said. "We played a solid first half and maintained it into the second half, then we got caught up in everything but soccer after they scored the go-ahead goal."

Wilkes Central pulled even on a header goal by Ryan Harrold, then went up 3-2 on another score by Harrold with 24:45 left in the game.

"That is when the wheels fell off," Draughn said of his team.

Starmount thought it had tied the game 3-3 when Lopez scored, but the goal was waved off because of an offsides call.

"I think that call really broke our backs, so to speak," Draughn said. "We had played well up until that point, and they let it get into their minds."

Drew Walker scored the final goal of the game with 20:30 left, putting the Eagles in the driver's seat the rest of the way. Harrold got the assist.

In the JV game, Starmount and Wilkes Central battled to a 3-3 tie.

The Rams' JV and varsity teams will host Ashe County tonight (Wednesday). The JVs start at 5:15, followed by the varsity at 7.
