EAST BEND -- Javier Guadarrama earned a hat trick, and Forbush's boys soccer team outlasted Starmount 4-2 in a physical Mountain Valley 2A match Wednesday night.

The Falcons scored two goals in the game's first 13 minutes, the first by Christian Lovas and the second from Guadarrama. But Starmount rallied to tie the contest 2-2 by halftime.

Juan Lopez netted the Rams' first shot, heading in a corner kick served up by Rusty Shores. Mariano Flores scored with less than a minute to play blasting in a long-range shot off an assist from Mauricio Lopez.

"It was feast or famine for my offense," Forbush coach Seth Davis said. "Either we scored or we were called offsides. We scored two goals in the first half and we were offsides 15 times."

The two Yadkin rivals went hard at each other through the first 20 minutes of the second half. Starmount then was forced to play the rest of the way a man down after one of its players was disqualified (issued a yellow card, then a red card).

Guadarrama took advantage, booting in two goals on breakaways. His final score, which gave him the hat trick, came with nine minutes left in the match.

Lopez, who leads Starmount with 21 goals this season, had a chance to get No. 22 in the second half. But Forbush keeper Ethan Kilby was able to knock a Lopez shot away to preserve what was still a 3-2 Falcons lead.

Kilby, Burt Lujano and Jose Gomez each assisted one of Guadarrama's goals. Lujano also assisted Lovas' score.

"If you have ever heard the expression, 'I went to a fight and a soccer game broke out' that is the best statement for this match," Davis said. "We played about 35 seconds of soccer tonight, and the rest was a jumbled, chaotic mess. My hat off to Starmount for playing hard."

According to Starmount coach Dale Draughn, officials whistled players for 28 fouls on the night, with the numbers about even on each side.

Kilby recorded 12 saves for Forbush, while Oscar Hernandez had seven saves for Starmount.

"I am not pleased or happy with the loss to say the least, but I am pleased with how we handled ourselves and never gave up to the final whistle," Draughn said. "Forbush knows they played a game tonight. We have to learn from our mistakes and build on the positive things we did tonight and prepare for Wilkes Central at Wilkes on Monday."

Wednesday's result keeps Forbush (5-1 MVAC, 10-2-1 overall) at the top of the conference standings with Wilkes Central (4-1 MVAC, 10-2-0). Starmount drops to 2-2 MVAC, 6-4 overall.

The Rams still have four conference games left, including another against Wilkes Central in Boonville on Oct. 16. Wilkes Central's lone conference loss came against Forbush in September. The Eagles, though, beat the Falcons 3-1 in the rematch Monday night.

Forbush led that contest 1-0 after a scoreless first half, getting a goal from Lujano. But with 20 minutes left, Ryan Harrold of Wilkes Central picked up a loose ball and beat Kilby with a well-place shot to make it 1-1.

Marco Sanchez took advantage of miscommunication on the part of Forbush's defense to put Wilkes Central ahead 2-1 with 12 minutes left.
