BOONVILLE -- Starmount's Mauricio Lopez earned his third-consecutive hat trick Monday night.
This time, the Ram senior needed just over five minutes to accomplish the feat.
One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lopez filled up the net three times between the 37:13 mark and the 32:10 mark of the first half, getting Starmount started on its way to a 12-2 non-conference win against Alleghany.
Lopez netted four goals against Surry Central and three against Elkin last week. He now has 21 on the season and is bearing down on the all-time Starmount record for goals -- needing just seven more to tie Edgar Zamora's 74.
The Rams, who improved to 6-3 overall with the victory, weren't just the Mauricio Lopez show. Coach Dale Draughn's team scored 10 goals in the first half. Pedro Morales and Adrian Zamora each netted two shots before intermission. Ricardo Rojas, Mariano Flores and Rusty Shores also got into the act, giving the Rams a 10-1 cushion at the break.
Oscar Hernandez turned a diving header into a goal after halftime, while Julio Jimenez added the final Starmount tally off a header in the final minutes.
"When it got 3-0 quickly I started subbing, and we got a look at what next year will look like with the seniors gone," Rams coach Dale Draughn said. "I don't like to run up the score but as a coach, you can not tell a player not to score, and some of the players who scored got their first goals of the season."
Flores, Morales, Nate Benfield, Zack Williams, Hernandez and Charley Prigmore all had assists. This was Starmount's most lopsided win of the season. Alleghany has a relatively new boys soccer program, which competes in the Northwest 1A Conference. Next season, the Rams and Trojans will be conference mates in a new 1A/2A league.
"We emptied the bench early, and everyone got to see a lot of playing time while the main starters were rested for Wednesdays conference encounter with Forbush," Draughn said. "I put restriction on how we could score in the second half, plus we worked on some things for Wednesday that we could against somebody other that us.
"Give Alleghany credit. They never gave up and they showed great sportsmanship. They were just outmatched."
Starmount's JV team played Bishop McGuinness on Monday, tying the Villains 2-2. Juan Morales and Ponciano Flores had the JV Rams' goals.
Wednesday's Starmount-Forbush clash in East Bend looms large in the conference standings. Forbush suffered its first conference defeat Monday, 3-1 at Wilkes Central.
