The Surry County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident of a Surry County detective being bitten by a dog.

According to a press release from the sheriff's office released Friday, the incident occurred Thursday at 139 Lineback Road in Mount Airy.

Detective Jeremy Luffman and Detective David Hamlin were attempting to speak to the resident of the home when Luffman was attacked and bitten by a pit bull.

According to the report, Luffman attempted to knock on the front door of the residence as two dogs gathered at the bottom of the stairs.

The report stated Luffman attempted to calmly walk back to his vehicle as a third dog approached and began to bark. A pit bull then became aggressive and as Luffman attempted to pass by the dog, the animal bit him in the rear of his left leg.

The dog continued with the attack when Luffman pulled his weapon and fired one round in the direction of the dog.

The dogs dispersed, and Luffman and Hamlin retreated to their patrol vehicle.

According to the report, Luffman sustained a minor puncture wound and was treated by staff at the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center and Northern Hospital of Surry County.

Surry County Animal Control Officer Ronald Bingman followed up with the resident of the home, and the dog was transported to a local veterinarian's office by the owner.

The dog had been vaccinated and will be quarantined by protocol for observation by Surry County Animal Control. The investigation is ongoing.
