The Rams, regular season champions in boys track, baseball and boys tennis, held off Wilkes Central and Forbush to win the Cup, which recognizes the school with the strongest overall athletic program within each conference around the state.
The final conference standings: Starmount 222, Wilkes Central 216.5, Forbush 200, Surry Central 196, Ashe County 186, North Surry 185.5 and North Wilkes 167.
The Rams also won conference championships in volleyball and boys basketball during the school year and finished second in sports like softball and boys soccer.
Bishop McGuinness won the Wachovia Conference Cup for the Northwest 1A. The private school from Kernersville earned second place in soccer and women's track to lock up the award over Mount Airy.
East Wilkes finished sixth and Elkin seventh. Here are the final standings: Bishop McGuinness 125, Mount Airy 103.5, South Stokes
97, Easy Surry 93, West Wilkes 91, East Wilkes 81, Elkin 74, Alleghany 61.5
and North Stokes 61.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association and Wachovia also sponsor the Wachovia Cup trophies, which recognize the top sports programs in each classification.
