Starmount athletic physicals June 25
Starmount High School will be holding physicals for prospective athletes at Jonesville Family Medical Center on Wednesday, June 25 at 8:30 a.m.
The cost is $10. All athletes will need a copy of the physical form, which has been signed by a parent, before they will be given a physical. These forms are available from their coach or can be obtained in the office at Starmount High.
The physical will be good for a calendar year and will be the only one they will need to play a sport at the school. For more information, call 468-2891 and ask to speak to coach Carter.
Attention summer coaches: Keep us informed about your team
It's summer, and while school sports are on hiatus for a few months, there are still plenty of local teams in action.
If you coach a local recreation or traveling team -- any sport, boys or girls -- or adult -- we invite you to submit write-ups on your group's achievements. Be sure to include all the basics -- who, what, when, where -- and make sure to include all first and last names.
Photos are welcome as well. "High resolution" digital prints work the best for us (these are usually pretty big files, 1MB or more). Again, just be sure to identify everyone pictured.
For more information or to submit items, contact sports editor Eric Lusk at elusk@elkintribune.com or give him a call at 835-1513 ext. 16.
Clarification
Starmount's Logan Nixon should have been included in the list of all-conference track athletes published in The Tribune and Yadkin Ripple published last week.
Nixon was the Mountain Valley 2A Conference pole vault champion.
ASU's football opener vs. LSU will be on ESPN
BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University football's 2008 season opener at LSU, set for Saturday, Aug. 30, will be televised on ESPN.
To accommodate the live national broadcast, kickoff has been moved to 5 p.m.
The game looms as one of the most intriguing matchups of the opening weekend of the '08 season. Appalachian and LSU have combined to win five of the last 10 national championships in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA).
Last season, ASU became the first FCS team to ever defeat a nationally ranked FBS squad when it toppled No. 5 Michigan in the season opener and went on to win its third-straight national championship. LSU won its second national crown in five years when it downed Ohio State in the 2007 Bowl Championship Series title game in New Orleans.
The contest marks the second time in four years that the Mountaineers will venture into LSU's "Death Valley," the 92,400-seat Tiger Stadium. In 2005, The Apps trailed the Tigers just 14-0 after three quarters before falling, 24-0. The Mountaineers had opportunities to go into the fourth period behind by less than one score, but had third-quarter possessions end with a dropped touchdown pass and a field-goal attempt that caromed off an upright.
Appalachian has won 13-straight nationally televised games, including last year's opener on the Big Ten Network, and is 12-0 all-time on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The game at LSU is the first of two ASU regular-season contests slated to be televised on the ESPN family of networks in '08. Appalachian's home tilt versus Wofford will be broadcast live on ESPN2 on Oct. 31.
Additional Mountaineer games will be televised as part of the Southern Conference's television package, which will be finalized in the coming weeks.
