The Elkin Royals will begin the defense of their 2007 Western North Carolina Babe Ruth state championship this weekend.

The team of 16-, 17- and 18-year-olds, also known as the Surry County All-Stars, will go on the road for their season opener, traveling to West Davidson on Saturday.

The Royals lost two members from last year's squad -- including current UNC Pembroke slugger Keith Whitman, an Elkin High graduate -- but have reloaded with five new players. Three of those players are pitchers.

"The early season may be tough for Elkin because we have five players playing American Legion or showcase ball," coach Gregg Carter said. "But they should all be finished in time for the playoffs."

Standouts from Elkin and Surry Central high schools make up the core of the 2008 lineup. Buckin' Elks on the Royals roster include Brian Carter, Matt Carter, Corey Uldrick, Matt Hinson, Kyle Whitman, David Tilly, Brent Puckett, Andrew Steiner and Chatham Wurdeman. Golden Eagle players include Ty Hudson, Tanner Hudson, Austin McLamb, Justin McLamb and Cory White.

Other players include Dillon Wilcox of East Surry; Josh Holderfield and Taylor Hull of North Surry and Seth Holderfield of West Stokes. Gregg Carter will be assisted this season by Mack Hinson, Jeff Holderfield and former Royals player Andrew Millaway.

The Royals will play at home for the first time on Saturday, June 14 in a doubleheader against North Davidson starting at 4 p.m. All Elkin home games will be played at the high school field on Saturday afternoons, typically starting at 4 or 5 p.m.

The Royals, playing under the name of Surry County All-Stars, followed its state championship last summer with a fourth-place finish in the Babe Ruth Southeast Region tournament in Tarboro, winning two games before being ousted.
