An unattended charcoal grill is the apparent cause of a fire that damaged an apartment building at 205 Church St. Friday night.

Neighbors at the restored two-story white frame house that has supplied rental apartments for more than 40 years called in the blaze a little after 10:30 p.m.

A resident of an upstairs apartment said she and her house mate had grilled chicken on the small, portable device earlier in the evening.

She said later she heard people yelling and opened the back door of the apartment to find flames.

She poured water on. the grill in an attempt to put it out.

Vinyl siding was left melted and charred. Smoke filled the upper floors of the building.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Neighbors said the building had recently been renovated.

Three apartments were occupied in the building affected. It also includes the manager's office.

Separate cottages at the complex were not damaged.
