Area residents got the opportunity this week to weigh in on who the next Elkin City Schools superintendent will be.

School board members were to begin an initial screening of candidates in a special closed-door session Tuesday night. That session followed meetings with board members at two of the district's schools.

"We will look at the interested candidates and see who we might want to interview," board Chairman Stewart Roten said Monday.

Seven people applied for the position vacated in January by Barry Shepherd. Then-Assistant Superintendent Debbie Brown was named interim superintendent.

Two of the applicants are local, two from out of state and the others from across the state. "There is a wide range of experience levels," Roten said. "Some are near retirement and some are early one in their careers."

He said the board had not developed a characterization of the the superintendent they wanted.

Meetings at schools this week were part of developing that, he said. Two board members each were available at each of the schools through the week. The meetings were held at Elkin High School and Elkin Middle School at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Board members will be available to discuss the superintendent choice at the elementary school at 3 p.m. Thursday.

"We wanted to get some feedback," Roten said. "The meetings are open to anybody, but I suppose they will tend to be more with staff because of the timing."

Tuesday night's closed session will lead to board interviews. Roten said the school system hopes to have a new superintendent on the job by July to prepare for the new school year that begins in August.

The new chief executive will come in during continued renovation of Elkin High School.
