Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign announced Sunday that former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to visit Elkin Tuesday.
It is part of an 11-town, two-day swing through the state stumping for his wife, according to a campaign email that went out Sunday afternoon.
The candidate's state office confirmed the stop but said no further details would be available until today
Clinton will visit Boone, Wilkesboro, Elkin and Mt. Airy on Tuesday and Apex, Sanford, Lillington, Dunn, Hope Mills, Lumberton, and Whiteville on Wednesday.
All events are free and open to the public.
State Rep. Jim Harrell III was out late Sunday night looking for the proper place for the presidential visit. He said he was working from a list of location criteria given by the campaign.
Other local Democrats found out late Sunday. Former party Chairman Tom Flippin said he had not heard about it Sunday afternoon. "I'll be there. Just let me know when."
Mayor Lestine Hutchens, registered as a Republican, said, "It would be very exciting if a former president were to come to Elkin. Have we ever had one?"
Longtime Democrat Lewis Alexander also said he had not heard Sunday.
"Her operation called the other day and asked would I support her. I told them I had not decided yet."
He said he would be interested in seeing the former president, however.
He has been in Elkin since 1946 and could not remember another president coming to town.
A message left for current Surry County Democratic Party Chairman Larry Covington of Pilot Mountain was not returned Sunday night.
