ONA, WVA -- Starmount's softball team beat their coach's old high school during a weekend trip to West Virginia.
Chelsea Varner led the hitting attack, going 3-for-3 in a 4-2 win over Cabell Midland High. Teammate Brittany White hit a double for the Rams.
Jana Matthews earned the pitching win for coach Heather Courts' team. Starmount scored three runs in the second inning and one more in the third.
Cabell Midland, which suffered its first loss of the season to Starmount, got a home run from star slugger Meredith Baisden, who has hit seven homers in a 10-game stretch. Starmount held Cabell Midland to only four hits overall for the day.
ASHE COUNTY 10, NORTH WILKES 0 (5): The Huskies pounded out 10 hits in the mercy rule shortened MVAC contest. Seven of nine starters had at least one hit, led by a 2-for-3 performance from Kendra Yearick, who also had three RBIs and a run.
Yearick was the winning pitcher for Ashe County, which held the Vikings to only one hit, a single by Amber Owens. Yearick struck out nine.
Baseball
ASHE COUNTY 11, NORTH WILKES 0 (5) -- The Huskies remained unbeaten in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference, topping the Vikings in a mercy rule shortened contest Friday. Ashe pitcher Dustin Absher held the Vikes to only one hit.
The Huskies jumped out early with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, then put five more on the board in the bottom of the third.
Keaton Mash lived up to his last name, mashing three hits, including a triple. David Bare took the loss for North Wilkes, which is now 0-4 in conference play, 1-8 overall.
North Wilkes will play at home twice this week, entertaining Starmount on Tuesday and North Surry on Friday.
Girls Soccer FORBUSH 4, SURRY CENTRAL 0: Leticia Patino, Jessica Baity, Lindsay Lineberry and Audrey Niemeyer all scored for the Falcons last Thursday in an MVAC game at East Bend.
Forbush improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the league. Forbush had 36 shots on the game and Surry Central's Lauren Williams made 21 saves.
The Eagles fell to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the MVC.
Tennis EAST WILKES 6, SOUTH STOKES 3: The Cardinals got wins at the top and bottom of their singles and doubles ladders to fell the Sauras on the road last Thursday.
Ethan Lyon won his No. 1 singles match over Caleb Shelton despite losing the first set 6-1. Lyon fought back for a 6-4 triumph in set two and 6-2 in set three.
Houston Callaway had an easier time at No. 2 singles, dispatching of his foe 6-0, 6-0. East's other singles wins came from Mitchell Welborn and Jeremy Bauguess, who play at No. 5 and 6 respectively.
Lyon and Callaway gave East the team victory with a 10-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Welborn and Lariat Hemric added another Cardinal victory at No. 3 doubles for good measure, 10-4.
East Wilkes improved to 2-4 in the conference and 3-6 overall with the victory. The Cardinals, coached by Aaron Simmons, are scheduled to play at Alleghany on Tuesday, will host Mount Airy on Thursday and will host North Wilkes on Friday.
WILKES CENTRAL 6, SURRY CENTRAL 3: The Golden Eagles suffered their first conference loss of the season on Friday, falling to 4-1 in the Mountain Valley 2A and 4-4 overall.
Wilkes Central took four of six singles matches and got two wins in doubles. Two of the singles matches went to third-set tiebreakers.
Jonathan Cook got a singles win for Surry Central with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-5 triumph over Matthew Hollis, while Kyle Eiswald for Surry Central beat Justin Greer in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Surry Central returns to the court on Tuesday at Starmount.
