The result drops the Buckin' Elks to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. South Stokes, which no-hit Mount Airy last week, improved to 2-2.
The Elks came out swinging against Kloc but earned two quick outs. Brian Carter then produced the first hit of the game when he ripped a double to deep center field that just missed going out. Elkin couldn't capitalize, and Kyle Whitman grounded out to the pitcher to end the frame.
Carter took the mound for the Elks, striking out the first two batters he saw and getting Kloc to ground out to short.
"Brian pitched well tonight." Elkin coach Steve Martin said after the game.
The next two innings remained scoreless. Elkin went down 1-2-3 in the second, striking out twice and flying out.
Jason Brown led off the South Stokes' second inning with a double deep into right field. But Carter and the Elkin defense buckled down and got Brown out at third on a ground ball to Carter.
Corey Uldrick led off the third for Elkin with a walk, but Yoshi Torriente hit into a double play. Brent Puckett struck out to end the frame.
Carter got his fourth and fifth strikeouts of the night in the bottom of the third to keep things knotted at 0-0.
The Elks started to make some sparks in the top of the fourth when Brian Carter got his second hit of the night on a single to right field. South Stokes got Carter at second on a fielder's choice by Kyle Whitman, but Travis Myers got aboard with a single.
Both Whitman and Myers advanced on a wild pitch with Matt Carter up at the plate next. But Kloc struck Carter out to get out of trouble.
South Stokes got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Patrick Spaugh ripped a single that brought Jason Brown in to score. Carter got out of the inning with minimal damage, though, striking out his sixth and seventh batters of the night.
Elkin's struggles at the plate continued in the fifth inning, and the Sauras sat them down 1-2-3.
South Stokes busted the game open in the bottom of the inning when Spaugh hit a double that brought home two runs, making the score 3-0.
"We hung in till the fifth but the wheels just finally fell off." coach Martin said.
Jason Brown attempted to steal home for the Sauras, running out of the baseline to avoid catcher Matt Carter. He eventually scored in what was probably the most controversial call of the night. Sterling Fiske knocked in a single for the fifth South Stokes run of the night.
Myers came in to finish the inning for the Elks. South Stokes scored one more time on an error for a 6-0 lead, then Kloc sat the Elks down three up, three down again.
The Sauras scored their final run of the night on a Kloc single.
"Carter pitched well for them. We tried to make adjustments, and we did and I was happy with that." South Stokes coach Gary Nail said.
Brian Carter led Elkin from the plate, finishing 2-for-3. Patrick Spaugh led the Sauras, going 3 for 3 with three RBIs. The Elks will try to bounce back Thursday night, playing a make-up game at Starmount.
