A man leaving work Saturday evening was killed in a single-car accident on Poplar Springs Road after his car struck a utility pole and rolled over in a field.
Emergency workers arrived to find the car on its roof and Aaron Michael "Lee" Cockerham, 31, trapped inside.
Capt. Tony Sewell of the Mountain Park Rescue Squad said Cockerham was dead when the squad reached the scene.
Highway Patrol Trooper B.G. Jones said Cockerham was heading north when he ran off the road to the left in front of 881 Poplar Springs Road around 5:30 p.m.
"He was going a little fast for the curve," Jones said.
As darkness fell, power crews waited to tend to the utility pole, which was cracked about 10 feet up from the ground. The crack worsened as rescue squad and EMS personnel cut away one side of Cockerham's car to remove him from the vehicle, causing the pole and power lines to lean dangerously over the scene.
