The threat of wintry weather Thursday night and into Friday morning put conference basketball tournaments in a delay game.

The Northwest 1A boys title contest between Elkin and East Surry, scheduled for Thursday at Alleghany, has been pushed back until tonight.

The contest is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at Mount Airy High School, immediately following the girls championship between Bishop McGuinness and East Surry.

If games are unable to be played today because any wintry weather lingers, the tournament finales will be moved to Saturday afternoon, according to Elkin principal Mark Byrd. Start times will be 1 p.m. (girls) and 2:30 p.m. (boys). The site for a possible Saturday set of games had not been determined as of press time.

Semifinal games still have not been completed in the Mountain Valley 2A tournament.

The Starmount boys and the North Surry girls advanced to their respective title games with wins Wednesday night.

Their opponents were supposed to be determined last night, but the boys semifinal game between North Surry and Ashe County and the girls semifinal between Ashe County and Wilkes Central were postponed.

Those contests are set to be made up tonight at North Surry, with the MVAC championship games tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 3 and 4:30 p.m.

If for some reason, the MVAC is unable to play tonight, the rest of the tournament could be cancelled because teams would not have enough time to make up the games.

The state mandates that all conference tournaments be completed by Saturday afternoon to accommodate the seeding process for next week's state playoffs.

Those brackets are set to be released over the weekend.
