Elkin-East Surry title game postponed

The Northwest 1A boys and girls basketball championship games set for tonight (Thursday) at Alleghany High School have been postponed because of the threat of winter weather.

The Elkin-East Surry boys title game and the Bishop McGuinness-East Surry girls title game are tentatively rescheduled for Friday night at Mount Airy High School, according to Elkin principal Mark Byrd. The girls contest will start at 5 p.m., and the boys game will follow around 6:30.

Forecasts are calling for light freezing rain to begin in the Sparta area around 6-7 p.m. and becoming heavier after 9 p.m. A winter storm watch is in effect through tomorrow morning for Wilkes, Alleghany and Surry counties.

If school is not in session Friday, then the title games could be moved to Saturday, Byrd said. The girls game would start at 1 p.m., with the boys to follow. A site is still TBA if games need to be moved to Saturday.

Elkin's boys, the No. 5 seed, advanced to the championship game by topping fourth-seeded North Stokes on Monday and upsetting regular season champion Mount Airy on Tuesday. East Surry, which finished third in the regular season, beat No. 7 South Stokes on Wednesday night to advance to the final.

The winner of the boys title game will take the conference's No. 2 seed into the state playoffs. Elkin will remain the No. 5 seed from the Northwest 1A if it does not win the championship game.

Also, Mountain Valley 2A Conference tournament semifinal games set for tonight (Thursday) have been postponed. Ashe County and North Surry were supposed to play on the boys side, with Ashe County and Wilkes Central set to go in girls action.

That means that the MVAC championship games will be moved from Friday to Saturday.

Starmount earned a berth in the boys title game with a 56-49 win over Wilkes Central on Wednesday. The Rams are set to play either Ashe County or North Surry in the championship round.

There is a chance the MVAC tournament may not finish at all. If semifinal games aren't played Friday night, then there doesn't appear to be a way to have the tournament completed by Saturday afternoon, when the NCHSAA mandates they be finished.

Starmount is safely a No. 1 seed for the state playoffs no matter what happens and will host its opener on Tuesday night.
