To the editor:

The Surry County Board of Commissioners wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the two recent plane crash incidents here in Surry County over the weekend.

The county commissioners offer prayers that God will ease the pain of this loss and prays that God will offer understanding and strength to these families and friends in the face of such a tragedy.

The Surry County Board of Commissioners also wants to publicly acknowledge and thank Surry County EMS Director John Shelton and all the many county emergency services employees, Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson and all of his deputies who served on scene, the N.C. Highway Patrol officers who served on scene, the City of Mount Airy Fire Department for the use of its ladder truck and some of their personnel, and the numerous other volunteers who bravely and selflessly stepped in to serve these two communities and these victims and their families in this time of tragedy and dire time of need.

In addition to these public servants, the county commissioners graciously acknowledge and thank the volunteers in the Bannertown VFD, Ararat VFD, Four Way VFD, Skull Camp VFD, Franklin VFD, Westfield VFD, White Plains VFD, Pilot Knob VFD, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, the South Surry VFD, Dobson Rescue Squad, and Central Surry VFD for their service in responding to the Feb. 1 incident just outside of the Mount Airy-Surry County Airport in the Holly Springs Community.

The County Commissioners graciously acknowledge and thank the volunteers in the CC Camp VFD, Elkin Rescue Squad, State Road VFD, Dobson Rescue Squad and the Town of Elkin Fire Department employees for their service in responding to the Feb. 3 incident at the Elkin Airport.

The county commissioners want to also thank the local American Red Cross for its support to all the officials and volunteers during these incidents.

The county commissioners ask that all citizens of Surry County pray for the families and friends of these victims and that we each pray for all the local men and women who bravely stepped in to volunteer and serve and stepped into harms way to do their jobs.

These public servants and volunteers will forever be changed as a result of these tragedies and prayer and solace will be needed to comfort them and help them in personally dealing with these terrible tragedies.

In the face of tragedy and adversity, our public servants and volunteers performed admirably and we are all very grateful.

The County Commissioners also ask for prayer for the families in the Holly Springs community whose lives have been impacted by the Feb. 1 incident and ask for God's blessing on this community and ask for understanding, healing and resolve in dealing with this tragedy in their neighborhood.
