ASHEVILLE -- A former Elkin High basketball standout broke the single-game scoring record for Salem College over the weekend.

Kelsey Rector poured in 31 points in the Spirits' 83-40 victory over Warren Wilson College.

The previous record had been 27 points, held by Alex Ervin and Shakila Springs (2006-07 season).

Rector, who reached 1,000 career points for the Buckin' Elks during her junior season, achieved her scoring milestone without getting a break. Salem only had five players dressed for the game.

Salem jumped to a 44-20 lead at halftime and kept up the pace in the second half.

Courtney Sauer of Carthage also had a career scoring night for Salem with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Michala Michaux of Morganton scored 15 points, dished out a school-record 12 assists and had seven rebounds.

Rector is one of four Salem players averaging more than 10 points per game. Her average, per the school's athletics Web site, is 10.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Salem (8-14) will play its final game of the 2007-08 season on Thursday, hosting Bennett College. Tip off time is 7 p.m.
