Despite Thursday's wintry mix and the prediction for more beginning Saturday morning, today's slate of local sports action still looks good to do.

Elkin and Starmount officials said Friday morning that basketball and wrestling scheduled for this evening were still on.

The Buckin' Elks will host Mount Airy on the hardwood and will travel to the Granite City for a wrestling match. Starmount is slated to host Wilkes Central in hoops and visit the Eagles for wrestling.

East Wilkes officials had not yet decided on what to do with their games tonight -- basketball at home against East Surry and wrestling at East Surry. For now, those events appear on schedule but a final decision will be made around lunch time, one school staffer said Friday morning.

North Wilkes' away basketball game at North Surry and home wrestling match against the Greyhounds also is still on for tonight.

((FRIDAY MID-MORNING UPDATE: All Wilkes County sporting events are on as scheduled for today, according to a county school system press release. Saturday events have been cancelled due to impending threatening weather)).

Surry Central was not scheduled to play basketball tonight anyway, breaking from game action because of semester exams until Starmount visits on Tuesday.

The Mountain Valley 2A swim championships, set for today at 5 p.m. in Pilot Mountain, are still on, Starmount coach Oz Prim said Thursday afternoon. The threat of snow and wintry weather on Saturday, though, could force the postponement of the Northwest 1A championships, which are currently scheduled to get underway Saturday afternoon.

Wintry weather is predicted to set in to the Tri-County area around 6-7 a.m. on Saturday, according to a weather.com forecast posted Friday morning. After beginning as freezing rain, it could snow all day.

The make-up time for the meet would likely be Monday, if permits.

Now that the high school basketball and wrestling seasons have reached conference play, several of tonight's match-ups loom large.

The Starmount-Wilkes Central wrestling bout will be for first place in the Mountain Valley 2A at the halfway point. The boys basketball game between the schools will begin to break apart the four-way logjam at the top of the league standings between the Rams, Eagles, Ashe County and North Surry.

East Wilkes has played several memorable girls basketball games against East Surry the past few years. The rematch between the teams nicknamed Cardinals will help determine the pecking order in the Northwest 1A behind juggernaut Bishop McGuinness.

East Wilkes is currently in fourth place but could pull into third or even make a run at second with a win tonight.

Mount Airy's boys basketball team comes to Elkin with a perfect record still intact. The Bears are 16-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play. Elkin is 6-8, 4-5.

The Mount Airy girls also are solid, boasting records of 13-3, 7-2. The Lady Bears beat East Surry last week. Elkin's girls are 4-10, 4-5.
