No one was injured in the 2 p.m. blaze at 2757 Clingman Road.
Ronda volunteer fire department was on the scene as well as responders from Roaring River, Pleasant Hill and a Wilkes County Rescue Squad. There were 25 firefighters on the scene, seven trucks, and one ambulance.
The fire started in the kitchen while the homeowner was outside. A neighbor saw smoke and called 911. Most of the fire damage was contained to the kitchen, dining room and attic.
Ronda's Fire Chief Bruce Byrd said, "The fire started because of a malfunction of the stove. We don't see a lot of structure fires in Ronda. We hadone on Bagley Springs during November 2006 but that was the first in a couple of years."
Damage to the house was initially estimated at $65,000, Byrd said. The residents will stay with family while their insurance company reviews the damage.
Rescue Squad members Joel Landsberg and Chad Cardwell said, "For any structure fire, Wilkes always sends a rescue squad ambulance in case a fireman is injured or there are any other emergency needs on the scene."
