Aaron Church scored 25 points for the victorious Vikings, who improved to 1-1 in the MVAC and 5-8 overall. Nathan Poteat added another 18 points.
Surry Central came very close to picking up its first win of the season but instead dropped to 0-11, 0-3. Eric High found the zone for the Eagles, pouring in a team-high 21 points. Ty Woodring, Austin McLamb and Matt Harris all hit double-figures with 10 points apiece.
"I talked to the guys about finding their roles and they did a great job," Central coach Ken Eiswald said. "Eric stepped into that role and lit (North Wilkes) up. They played mostly a 1-3-1 zone. They finally went to a box-and-one to keep him from getting the ball."
High missed a hurried shot at the end of regulation. In overtime, McLamb scored to put the Eagles ahead by a point, but North Wilkes answered.
Central trailed most of the game, but the Vikings never led by more than five points. "The kids played so poised," Eiswald said. "It was really all you could ask. We had so many guys play with so much heart tonight."
Girls Basketball SURRY CENTRAL 46, NORTH WILKES 41: Tealisha Boyd scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made six steals for the Golden Eagles, now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the MVAC. Brittany Draughn and Emily Perkins each added eight points for the Golden Eagles.
"We just came out with a little fire in our eyes finally, and we took it to 'em," Surry Central girls coach Phil Bowers said.
Surry Central outscored the Vikings 18-6 in the third quarter and 29-19 for the second half.
"We had good legs tonight," Bowers said. "We hadn't played since December 21st, and they played in a tournament over Christmas. We stole the ball a few times, made shots and kind of stepped up the intensity. I was pleased we got us a victory."
Sarah Smith led North Wilkes with 11 points and Blake Shumate added 10.
Wrestling SURRY CENTRAL 60, NORTH WILKES 21: The Golden Eagles got pins from Bobby Johnson, Casey Felts, Levi Senter, Austin Oakley, Josh Stover, Juan Chavez, Zack Murphy, Will Lawrence and Stephen Maynard to win their conference opener Friday.
Coach Stephen Priddy of Central said the performance was a great way to start 2008. "We hadn't wrestled since Dec. 21," Priddy said. " It was a really dominating performance. I thought we looked really good for the opener."
Felts got a big win against 2007 state qualifier Brian Rhodes in the 125-pound weight class. Jacob Longworth had a good showing but came away just short in an 8-7 loss to Jonathan Campbell at 103 and Cesar Pena was solid in a loss to another top wrestler in the 2A ranks, Mike Prouty at 119.
Elsewhere, Jed Martin won his match by forfeit at 171 and Daniel Billings picked up a forfeit for North Wilkes at 112.
Surry Central placed second in the Rick Williams Duals at South Stokes High on Saturday, winning four of five matches. The Golden Eagles won four pool matches against Rockingham County, Elkin, Mount Airy and South Stokes to reach the championship match against West Stokes.

Will Lawrence (215) won all five of his matches by pin or forfeit and Jed Martin (171) also finished unbeaten with five wins in the 10-team event.
Martin, a senior who finished second in the state a year ago, is 27-0 this season.
