Carver's Kuwante McCrae made two free throws in the final five seconds to hold off the Rams 52-51.
Starmount trailed 44-34 heading into the final period, getting outscored 19-5 in the third quarter. But then Rams' shooters started finding their touch.
Chris Cowles hit a couple of three-pointers, and Matt Brown added another. A layup by Victor Davila with 40 seconds to go gave the Rams a brief lead at 51-50. But a missed free throw by Starmount gave Carver another chance. McCrae was fouled, swished both of his free throws, and a three-pointer by Cowles as time expired missed.
Cowles had a solid night overall, making six three-pointers to finish with 18 points. Victor Davila enjoyed a double-double, snaring 11 rebounds to go with his 19 points.
But the Rams didn't really get much scoring from others. Cody Spicer was the next highest scorer with four points.
Starmount (4-5 overall) lost both of its games in the showcase event at Joel Coliseum, which featured the Rams and all 11 of Forsyth County's public school boys teams.
West Forsyth, which beat Starmount 53-33 on Thursday in the quarterfinals, went on to take second place. After stunning third-seeded Winston-Salem Prep in the semifinals 82-66, the Titans fell to top-seeded Mount Tabor 62-45 in the championship.
Starmount will begin the new year with a non-conference rematch against Mount Airy on Friday. The Granite Bears, which beat the Rams 69-42 back in November, have yet to lose, improving to 12-0 overall over the holidays.
