The Rams will host Mountain View High School of Orem, Utah, for a JV boys-varsity boys doubleheader. The JV game starts at 6 p.m., with the varsity teams to follow at 7:30. Starmount's girls are off from game action tonight.
Mountain View will play two games in North Carolina before heading home, taking on North Forsyth on Saturday.
Starmount, state finalists a year ago, are off to an 0-2 start to the season. It's not so much that the record is that surprising -- Mount Airy is one of the top 1A teams around and Calvary Baptist is an underrated independent. But it's the final margins of defeat that have fans curious.
Mount Airy beat Starmount 69-42, while Calvary Baptist topped the Rams 60-37.
In both games, Starmount seemed out of sync and struggled to get the ball into their big man, 6-9 forward Victor Davila.
The Virginia Tech commitment scored in double figures in both games but has yet to be the dominant force he's been the past few years.
The Rams also seem to miss the presence of its two departed starters from last year, forward Ferdinand Morales (now at Surry Community College) and point guard Kaleb Altiery (transfered to Calvary Baptist).
Mountain View plays in Class 4A in Utah. The team finished 1-20 a year ago under first-year coach Jeff Gardner but has won its first two games of this season.
Seniors Greg May, Tanner Young, Cameron Schmidt and Christian Bateman are Mountain View's key players. All four return from last year's team.
Starmount jumps into conference play next week, facing Yadkin rival Forbush on Tuesday night.
Other games tonight involving area teams include Elkin at Mount Airy, East Wilkes at East Surry and North Wilkes at West Lincoln.
Surry Central's boys will play Saturday in the Showcase Classic at Forsyth Country Day.
