GREENSBORO -- Elkin High School's varsity fencing team went 3-1 in a meet on Saturday.

The Buckin' Elks topped Bishop McGuinness 5-0, Eden Morehead 5-1 and Delta H (a Greensboro-based all-star team) 5-2 before suffering a 5-3 loss to East Chapel Hill.

Brian Rector, who fences in the No. 1 spot for Elkin's varsity team, went undefeated. He recorded all three wins in the East Chapel Hill match. Brian is the younger brother of former Elkin fencer David Rector, who is now a freshman at NC State.

Steve Deck and Brett Pardue form the rest of Elkin's varsity "A" team. Pardue's older brother, Caleb Pardue, now fences for Carolina.

Elkin's "B" team of Hannah Rector, Grant Justis and Abby Triplett won the "B" team meet, scoring wins over Bishop McGuinness, Morehead and East Chapel Hill.

Elkin's elementary school team of Noah Smith, Matt Schumak and Abby Triplett beat a team from Bishop 5-1.

"The loss to East Chapel Hill was reminiscent of last year's opening loss to the N.C. School of Science and Math," said coach Walter Triplett. "East's coach, Doug Guild, coached Science and Math last year, and as a former Carolina fencer, teaches a similar style to that of Elkin."

"We have a very young team this year," Coach Triplett continued. "We are starting a junior and two sophomores, but they have talent, and hopefully we can rebound and sweep the rest of the season as we did last year."

RAMS PLAYING IN SPENCER TOURNEY: Starmount's boys basketball team will play in another prestigious holiday tournament. This year, the Rams will be in the field of the annual Frank Spencer Holiday Classic in Winston-Salem. The tournament is staged at Wake Forest University's Joel Coliseum.

Starmount reportedly has the No. 2 seed for the event, but official pairings won't be announced until early December. The Rams are the only non-Forsyth County school in the field.

Starmount won both games it played at the Joel last season, beating Shelby and West Henderson in the state playoffs to win a spot in the 2A title game.

LADY RAMS LOSE DEBUT: In volleyball this past August, Starmount stunned 4A Mount Tabor to open the season. The Rams weren't so fortunate in their girls basketball opener on Tuesday night, falling at Mount Tabor 62-37.

Jordan Raye led Starmount with 13 points. Tabor jumped to a 32-16 halftime lead, spoiling the debut of new Rams coach Kyle Hutchens.

Starmount's boys and girls will be in action Tuesday night at Mount Airy.

FORMER ELK PLAYING FOR GUILFORD: Tyler Sanborn, who graduated from Elkin in 2006, will be a sophomore on Guilford College's men's basketball team this season. The Quakers stand to be one of the top teams in Division III this winter. Three publications have Guilford ranked in the top 15 -D3hoops.com has the Quakers fourth in its poll, The Sporting News tabbed Guilford eighth and DIII News picked coach Tom Palombo's team 11th.

KNIGHTS WIN FOR FIRST TIME: The revived Surry Community College men's basketball team got its first victory of the season Wednesday. The Knights defeated Stevens Prep 103-92 at home.

Leading the Knights, now 1-5 overall, were Marcus Brown, who scored 22 points, and Derein Chatman, who tossed in 21 points. Ferdie Morales tallied 18 points for SCC, and Qasim Frederick added 11 points. Will Thorp and Tim Lee each had 10.

The Knights outscored Stevens Prep 65-38 in the second half, after trailing 54-38 at the half.

"We just tightened up on defense, and we went to full court pressure," Surry coach Eddie Wilmoth said. "We kept rotating our lineup, keeping fresh men in. We made shots and had a balanced attack."

Finally, turnovers were not a problem for the Knights, who were averaging close to 20 turnovers per game.

"We only had 10 turnovers in the ball game," Wilmoth said. "The team's growing up. This is a big win for us. It really feels good as a coach to get that first victory, even better for the team."

The Knights play at Pfeiffer University on Monday.
