Festivities last 5-8 p.m. and are a precursor to the Sunday Christmas parade that rolls at 3 p.m.
On Thursday carolers and Larry Irwin's band will center their activities at the Wachovia Bank parking lot to entertain.
Trolley rides will proceed along Main Street for viewing decorations. Businesses are asked to decorate their front windows and use thematic white lights around the perimeter of the windows.
Organizers will light the downtown Christmas tree, and Santa will be on hand to read the Christmas story to children.
A majority of businesses will be open, and those attending the celebration are encouraged to visit the shops. "We are doing this to prove that we are ready and remind people that they don't have to go to Winston-Salem to shop. We want them to stay here.," Light-up Night Co-coordinator Cicely McCulloch said.
As encouragement to stay around and stop in the shops see what is available, merchants are giving away three $100 gift certificates throughout the evening. Register for the drawing and hang around. You must be present to win.
"It is a great night of community fun," said Teresa Howell, Main Street Program manager. "It think it is a fun time to get out and see your friends and neighbors."
From 5 p.m. until, the Elkin Masonic Lodge will hold its Pancake and Sausage Supper.
Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for those 10 and under. All proceeds go to Masonic charities.
