To the editor:

As a former Elkin town commissioner, I'd like to urge all the citizens of Elkin to vote Nov. 6. Our town is going through a lot of changes, and it is very important to choose the right path.

There is no denial of the fact that our dependence on traditional manufacturing jobs is coming to a grinding halt. The town has made substantial (and expensive) steps to find replacement manufacturing jobs but, unfortunately, what few manufacturers remain in this country are being highly recruited by multiple potential locations with ridiculously high levels of financial incentives, which cost taxpayers much more than they benefit the area. Taking money away from taxpayers and giving it to large corporations in the form of corporate welfare is simply wrong.

The key is to find alternative, decent-paying jobs. Various possibilities exist, but it seems that the entire focus around here lately has been on wine. In my opinion our local government, the Chamber of Commerce, our local newspaper and even our community college have overestimated the impact of the wine industry, hyping it as the darling of our society. The Tribune has even referred to wine as the "Salvation" of our local economy. I have yet to see evidence that growing grapes will be profitable. Farming is hard work with low pay, and alcohol is a drug that is extremely harmful. Promoting its usage is not in the best interest of our community and certainly is not in the best interest of our young people.

To my knowledge only one candidate has voiced opposition to alcohol. David Morrison had the courage to state at the recent candidate's forum that as a Southern Baptist and healthcare professional, he would suggest a different direction. While he does not wish to make this a polarizing issue, I greatly admire both his position and his courage. He offers a fresh view, is of impeccable integrity and, if elected, will help guide our town through these changing times.
