MONROE -- Surry Central forced double overtime against host Monroe before falling 1-0 in the first round of the 2A playoffs on Wednesday night.

The Redhawks got the goal off a free kick from the left side. The ball bounced off the opposite crossbar and got just past goalie Jose Diaz, who had several key saves for the Eagles on the night.

"We came out really strong," said assistant coach Matt Richardson. "We were winning the 50-50 balls. At the end of the second half, it evened out. Monroe started getting opportunities which gave them more confidence.

"In the second half, they played very physical, they were beating us to the ball, especially in overtime."

With three minutes left in regulation, Ed Lira had a 1-on-1 opportunity and got the ball just past the keeper but the shot was just wide, bouncing off the crossbar.

It was one of a couple of scoring chances for Lira on the night. Bernardo Leandro also had two scoring opportunities for the Eagles.

Seniors Memo Huerta and Hugo Lopez played their final game for Central, which fell to 7-11 on the season. Monroe improved to 14-5 and will advance to Saturday's second round.

Six of Surry Central's 11 losses this season have come by just one goal.

The Eagles, who played in the very tough Mountain Valley 2A Conference have potential to be very solid next season. Central took six freshmen to Wednesday's game. Two of the freshman forwards were starters.
