The Buckin' Elks, who lost to Starmount 4-2, showed a high level of fortitude in rallying for a 7-6 double-overtime victory against the Sauras. Elkin came back from 2-0, 3-2, 5-4 and 6-5 deficits to swipe the crucial Northwest 1A triumph.
The Elks improved to 7-1 against conference opponents and handed South Stokes its first league loss. Both teams are chasing undefeated Bishop McGuinness in the standings.
"It was one of those games where it was a shame someone had to lose," Elkin coach Joe McCulloch said. "It was emotionally draining. They'd go up, then we'd go up. Then they'd go up again."
Paul Ardizzola netted four goals for the Buckin' Elks, including what would be the game-winner with about three minutes left in the second overtime. Esteban Bustos scored twice. His first goal tied the game 5-5 with two minutes to play in regulation. His second tied the game 6-6 after South Stokes had scored earlier in the second extra period.
Sam Tayloe had the first Elkin goal, jump starting the Elks with a score in the first minute after halftime.
Caleb Shelton of South Stokes also had a hat trick plus one Tuesday night, scoring four times. "I shook his hand because he played a whale of a ball game," McCulloch said.
Elkin will see South Stokes again Oct. 16. South still has two games remaining against Bishop McGuinness, on Oct. 2 and Oct. 22.
