The Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference basketball recognitions took place at Ashe County High School following the conference tournament championship games, and local teams were well represented taking both men’s and women’s player of the year awards, and the conference champions for varsity.
The Elkin girls team and Starmount boys team took the 1A conference champion honors in their respective competition, with Elkin’s girls junior varsity team also taking the JV conference champion title.
Elkin’s Miracle Walters was named female player of the year for the MVAC, while her coach, Derek Carter, was honored as coach of the year. On the boys’ side, Starmount’s Kyler Gregory was named player of the year.
Those making women’s all-conference from local teams included Elkin’s Morgan Randleman, Kylie Thomas and Miracle Watlers; and East Wilkes’ Chelsea Edwards, Tess Jolly and Alexis Pardue. For all-conference honorable mention, local players recognized were Elkin’s Kenly Burchette and Samantha Cozart; East Wilkes’ Gracie Brown and Olivia Bullard; and Starmount’s Darion Dobson and Skylar Martin.
For the men’s all-conference honors, local players named were Starmount’s Kyler Gregory, Brandon Prescott and Andrew Smythers; and East Wilkes’ Joah Logan and Andrew Nance. Making the honorable mention list were Elkin’s Eli Brown and Jonah Christian; East Wilkes’ Camon Bryan and Shareef Ray; and Starmount’s Griffin Cass and Houston Nicks.
Men’s 2A champion was North Wilkes, and JV champion was Ashe County. Coach of the Year was Marty Behrens of North Wilkes.
Other players in the MVAC named to the all-conference lists for boys were Alex Greer of West Wilkes; Noah Johnson, Kruz Lowe of Wilkes Central; Avery Hash, Hunter Todd of Alleghany; Judd Price, Dante Shuler of Ashe County; and Daniel Pruitt, Jake Richardson and Jordan Wallis of North Wilkes. Honorable mention were Dylan Bauguess, Cameron Tribble of North Wilkes; Skylar Brooks, Zach Shumate of Wilkes Central; Jesse Brown, Evan Edmiston of West Wilkes; Tyler Hanks, Austin Hawkins of Alleghany; and Malachi Poe and Kendall Richardson of Ashe County.
The girls 2A champion was North Wilkes. Other all-conference players for the girls were Brooke Bentley, Kamre Gibbs, Kailey McNeil of Wilkes Central; Alexis Hoppers of Alleghany; Elizabeth Huffman of West Wilkes; Allison Livengood, Emily Phillips, Victoria Young of North Wilkes; and Samantha Woods of Ashe County. Making honorable mention were Samantha Billings, Jennifer Rhodes of North Wilkes; Cassie Burdiss, Caitlin Shepherd of West Wilkes; Sydney Kate Grubb, Chloe Sullivan of Ashe County; Cameron Hawkins, Kayla Lafferty of Alleghany; and Taylor Mastin and Heaven Walker of Wilkes Central.
