CARY— Elkin seniors Miracle Walters and Morgan Randleman pulled off upsets this past weekend to make it to the state championship, but unfortunately, that’s where the run came to an end.
Walters and Randleman took out the No. 1 seed in the East, Raleigh Charter, then the No. 2 seed in the West, Chatham Central, on Friday night to move on Saturday morning.
Both teams were equally matched, but in the end, Morgan Auger and Anna Petrangeli of Bishop McGuinness prevailed, beating Walters and Randleman 6-4, 7-5 for the championship. Auger is the defending player of the year in the Northwest Conference and a favorite to repeat this year.
Thursday night saw no luck for Elkin either, as they fell to Mount Airy in a tight match 5-4. For Walters and Randleman, they still have reason to celebrate despite coming up short. As a doubles team, Walters and Randleman went undefeated in the regular season, while as individuals, they pulled off the same feat.
However, they’re not done playing together as a team, as both Walters and Randleman are set to start basketball practice Monday night.
• In 2A action, Surry Central’s Sommer Chilton and Mallory Wilmoth almost pulled off a big upset in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Eagles were the fourth seed from the West, taking on the top seed from the East, Kate Whichard and Ellie Rinehart of Edenton Holmes.
Chilton and Wilmoth won the first set 7-6 (7-3), but lost the second 3-6. In the deciding third set, the Eagles pushed the East Regional champions to 5-7.
