SOUTHERN PINES — Homework can be made up, but experiences at Southern Pines like two underclassmen from East Wilkes and Forbush had on Monday and Tuesday can’t.
East Wilkes sophomore Hunter Tharpe made the 1A state tournament for the second-straight year, while Forbush freshman Mallory Fobes continued her dominant run into the tournament on the 2A side at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Fobes earned her way in with a 79 in 18 holes in the WPAC conference tournament, while Tharpe shot a 49 in nine holes to earn second place in the MVAC conference tournament.
At press time, not all results from the second day of the tournament were posted. However, midway through the round, Fobes was 20th overall after 27 holes. Fobes shot a 90 in round one, and was +6 through nine holes in round two.
Tharpe shot a 115 the year before, and improved on that greatly shooting a 98 in the first round. She finished with a 102 in the second round, and at press time, was tied for 61st.
Official results came out late Tuesday evening. Check The Tribune website at www.elkintribune.com for an update on Wednesday.
