Monday Night Football is set to begin later Monday, but in Wilkes County, they’re not caring much about the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. They are ready to pack the stadium at North Wilkes High School to cheer on the East Wilkes Cardinals.

The matchup was scheduled for Friday night, but as heavy rain shifted into the area, coaches made the decision to move the game to Monday at 7 p.m. The Cardinals (4-0) are off to a great start so far this year, but have in front of them perhaps the toughest opponent they’ve faced so far this season, and it comes in their first conference game.

East Wilkes is coming off of a dominant 48-15 win over Forbush. East Wilkes did not allow a first down until late in the second half, and scored a touchdown on its first five drives. They’ve also battled for wins against North Stokes, Surry Central and South Stokes. North Wilkes (1-3) hasn’t had the wins it would like, coming off of a 31-14 loss to Avery County, but the team has also shown life in its losses. They couldn’t close the deal against Forbush in a 20-19 loss, but were on the verge of scoring late to go ahead. Daniel Pruitt and Dylan Baugess will make the game interesting for sure on the Vikings side.

What this match will really come down to is the lines. Offensively and defensively, the Cardinals have been stellar, and they’re getting better. The front three — Chris Dixon, Quincy Lineberger and Adam Holbrook — did great controlling the line in the win over Forbush, and if they can put pressure on, then offensively, Andrew Nance and Camon Bryan can be dominant on the run for another East Wilkes win to move to 5-0.
