Elkin demolished Alleghany in soccer 9-0 Tuesday afternoon, but they did not take much time to celebrate.
It’s conference play, and despite the win, they know that Alleghany and their next opponent, Starmount, are not one and the same.
“Last year, we played [Starmount] close here, they beat us pretty bad at their place,” Elkin Head Coach Heath Foster said. “That’s going to be our most serious competition I think for 1A conference.”
After some struggles the past few games, Elkin came out against Alleghany and put up nine goals yet again. The last time they did not go out and put nine up came in a 7-0 win in 2013. They looked at their game against Ashe County closely, a 3-0 loss to see where they could improve.
“The difference in our games like at Ashe County, we had two opportunities to score before they had any. It came down to we didn’t get to that opportunity because we were too busy trying to dribble and doing something fancy with it instead of just laying it off and, ‘Boom,’” Foster said.
Elkin is now 3-6 overall, and 2-1 in the MVAC. Their opponents are 2-0 in the MVAC, and 6-2 overall. They’re set to square off at 5:15 Wednesday at Starmount High School.
