WILKESBORO — In what has proven to be a very eventful week for the Elkin wrestling team and its supporters, the Elks laid claim to their first conference wrestling title since 2004 with their 53-21 victory over Wilkes Central in both schools’ conference and regular season finales. This marks the first time that any other team than West Wilkes has held this position in the MVAC since 2008.

Five Elks delivered pin falls, three earned victory by means of forfeit and one achieved a technical fall to amass the 53 match points in their favor. Elkin surrendered two pin falls and gave up three losses by decision to create the 21 points awarded to their opponent.

“It’s nice to win a conference championship,” said Elkin Head Coach Matt Dunn. “We have higher goals as a team that have yet to be accomplished.”
