Elkin swimming and East Wilkes indoor track compete in State Championships

WINSTON SALEM — The 2017 NCHSAA Swimming and Indoor Track State Championships were held this past weekend and several local athletes made their mark on the big stage. Elkin had several swimmers in attendance, while East Wilkes had athletes in the Indoor Track finals. Results from each championship are below.


The Buckin’ Elks had a great turnout at the swimming championships in Carrboro last Friday and Saturday.

In the Women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay, Bianka Soos, Annie Douglas, Harper Libbert, and Maia Schweikert placed 17th with a time of 2:07.58. In the Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay the Elkin women’s team; Bianka Soos, Katie Sidden, Harper Libbert, and Maia Schweikert, placed 10th. This team also placed 14th in the Women’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

In the Men’s 200 Yard Medley Relay, Alex Duncan, Jarrett Petterson, Dockery Sloop, and Daniel Soos placed 10th with a time of 1:47.87. In the Men’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, Jarrett Petterson, Daniel Soos, Cameron Burleson, and Dockery Sloop placed 12th. In the Men’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Elkin placed 11th with a time of 3:38.38.

The 50 Yard Freestyle saw Sophomore, Maia Schweikert, placed 23rd with a time of 27.30. Alex Duncan placed fifth in the Men’s 100 Yard Butterfly and 18th in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Dockery Sloop placed 18th in the Men’s 100 Yard Freestyle. Jarrett Petterson placed 19th in the Men’s 100 Yard Breaststroke.

Overall, the Lady Elks placed 20th with a score of 20, and the Elkin men placed 15th with a score of 50.

Indoor Track:

East Wilkes had the only athletes at the Indoor Track State Championship in Winston-Salem.

Overall, the men’s team from East Wilkes placed 35th with a score of five. Kyle Rhodes closed out his year with a fourth-place finish in the Men’s 3200 Meter Run with a time of 10:01.09. In the men’s 4×800 Meter Relay, East Wilkes placed 17th with a time of 9:21.69.
