GASTONIA — The Starmount Lady Rams traveled to Gastonia for their non-conference match with Highland School of Technology on Friday evening. The Rams came away with a 3-0 win over the HST Lady Rams.
Starmount got on the board first when the sister connection combined for a goal at the 30:29 mark of the first half. Molly Maske sent a cross into Claire Maske, who finished it for the Rams’ first goal of the night. Things would cool off in the scoring department, as the weather was cold as well.
The Rams increased their lead with 5:27 remaining in the first half off a goal from Maggie Freed off the assist to Isabel Najera. That would be how the first half ended with the Rams leading 2-0. The SHS Lady Rams continued to shoot and make runs but could not find the back of the net until 3:54 remaining in the second half when Maggie Freed scored off the assist of Isabel Najera for the 3-0 margin of victory.
“We played very well and struggled at times, I don’t know if the weather was the cause or what,” said Coach Dale Draughn of his team’s performance. “We have the capability to light up the scoreboard, we just have to get the timing and team concept together.”
The SHS Lady Rams out-shot the Lady Rams of HST by a count of 22 to 8. Courtney Byrd and Lili Perez combined in goal for the shutout with Byrd recording eight saves on the night, while Perez did not face a shot on goal in her time between the pipes.
The win improves the SHS Lady Rams’ record to 1-0-1 on the young season, the loss drops the HST Lady Rams to 2-1 on their season. Starmount returns to action on Tuesday as it plays South Stokes (2-0), game time is 5:15 in Boonville. Results were not available by press deadline.
