The Buckin’ Elks basketball team hosted West Wilkes on Tuesday night in Elkin for the first Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game of the season. The Buckin’ Elks (0-4) put up a tough fight against the Blackhawks (1-5), but West Wilkes was able to take a 58-49 win over Elkin.

Things started off in Elkin’s favor as Jaylen Mayes was fouled and sent to the free throw line where he made one of his foul shots. West Wilkes was able to make a shot to take a 2-1 lead, but the Buckin’ Elks were able to answer back on their next possession. Tevin Harris was fouled and made one free throw to tie the game 2-2, then Elkin took a 4-2 lead as Beau Burgess put up a shot from down low.

Elkin kept up its offensive pressure as Mayes was once again fouled and put in one of his free throws to put the Buckin’ Elks ahead 5-2. West Wilkes started to make a comeback as the Blackhawks put their foot on the gas to go on a scoring run. West Wilkes put in shot after shot to take a 17-5 lead over Elkin, but the Buckin’ Elks were able to put in a three-point shot courtesy of Burgess. As the buzzer sounded at the end of the first, Maston Renegar let a shot fly from beyond half-court. Elkin’s crowd rose to its feet, and the ball swished through the net to give Elkin a three-point basket and make the score 19-11.

Coming off of the half-court shot and into the second quarter, Elkin was able to put up 12 points. Though the Buckin’ Elks were steadily improving, West Wilkes was able to hang onto the lead as it put up 16 points to take a 35-23 lead at the half.

Coming out of halftime, the Buckin’ Elks tried to climb their way out of a 12-point deficit. Harris started things off with a three-point shot to make the score 35-26, but West Wilkes was able to answer back with a two-point basket. After the basket, Elkin started to pick up steam and went shot for shot with the Blackhawks. Elkin was able to pull within three points as Renegar put in a three-point shot to make the score 39-36. Elkin kept fighting to take the lead and pulled within two points at the end of the third as Shane Price put in a basket to make the score 43-41.

Just as things started to look up for Elkin, West Wilkes turned things around on its end and outscored the Buckin’ Elks 15-8 in the fourth quarter. Elkin put up a tough fight, but the Blackhawks held on to take a 58-49 conference win.

Elkin moves to 0-4 overall, and 0-1 in the MVAC. On Friday night, Elkin will travel to Sparta to take on Alleghany (0-5, 0-1).
