RONDA — The East Wilkes women’s basketball team put on a show last week in Ronda to earn its first win of the season. The Cardinals put up an impressive offensive and defensive presence to take a 52-46 win over East Surry.

East Surry came out of the gate first and took an early 4-0 lead over East Wilkes. Tess Jolly answered back for the Cardinals as she set up behind the arch and drained a three-point shot. East Wilkes was able to take the lead on its next play as Gracie Brown had a breakaway and put up a two-point basket for a 5-4 lead.

As the first quarter rolled on, both teams put up shot after shot, but it was East Wilkes who came out on top. The Cardinals put up 12 points to take a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, East Surry started to turn up the pressure on East Wilkes. The Surry Cardinals put up shot after shot to take the lead away from East Wilkes with 5:44 left in the second quarter. East Surry didn’t allow a single East Wilkes basket until Alexis Pardue was able to put up a lay-up to make the score 19-14 in East Surry’s favor. Pardue kept the scoring alive for East Wilkes as she put up two free throws to cut East Surry’s lead to three points.

East Surry was able to pull away to take a 24-16 lead, but East Wilkes climbed out of the hole and drained four baskets to make the score 26-22. As time was winding down, Leah Nance put up a three-point shot from behind the left arch to put East Wilkes within one point. East Surry was able to hang on to a 26-25 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of the half, East Wilkes got things started quick as Jolly was fouled and made one of her free throws to tie the game, 26-26. The Cardinals kept putting up shots in the third quarter and were able to take a 41-35 lead over East Surry.

The tide had changed for East Wilkes going into the final quarter as the Cardinals put up 11 additional points to take a 52-46 win over East Surry.

Pardue lead the Cardinals as she scored 13 points, and had 11 rebounds. Mathis had nine points and 13 rebounds, Brown had nine points, Jolly had seven points, Nance and Ciara Pierce each had six points, and Martinez had two points.

East Wilkes sits at 1-0 for the 2017-18 season. The Cardinals will travel to North Stokes on Monday night to take on the Vikings in a non-conference match up.
