The Elkin Buckin’ Elks and the Starmount Rams baseball team always draw a crowd when the two teams meet up on the field. On Friday night, the Elks and the Rams were both looking for their second win of the season. Both teams battled back and forth and took the game to nine innings before Starmount was able to knock in three runs to take home a 5-2 win over the Elks.

Things started off on the right foot for both teams as Starmount and Elkin both scored in the first inning. The Rams brought Gage Vestal, the courtesy runner for Patrick Usher, across the plate after Henry Stone earned a double. Starmount struck first but were unable to bring Stone around the bases as the next two Starmount hitters struck-out thanks to a variety of pitchers from Elkin’s Cory Wiles.

In the bottom of the first inning, Elkin answered back with a run of their own as Hayden Brooks made his way around the bases. Brooks stole second and third after Patrick Usher threw two wild pitches. With Brooks on third, the Elks managed to bring him across the plate to tie the game 1-1.

While the first inning saw several hits for both teams, the second inning saw the Rams go three-up three-down and the Elks take one runner to base but failed to bring him across home plate.

With the score still tied 1-1, both teams started off the third inning with high notes. Starmount’s Peyton Mullins found first base after a hit to left field earned him a single. Mullins was brought around the bases when Patrick Usher came up with another double to give Starmount a 2-1 lead. The Rams were unable to capitalize and earn another run, but Starmount held on to a one run lead.

The Elks didn’t let the Rams keep its lead for long, as Elkin tied the game up in the bottom of the third. Colt Henderson earned a single to center field then was brought around the bases as Wiles earned a single, and Coy Yarboro also earned a single. Henderson’s run tied the game 2-2 as both teams kept up the pressure.

While the first three innings saw two runs from each team, neither team was bale to score until the ninth inning when Starmount scored three runs.

Before the ninth inning, Elkin had a chance to win the game in the seventh inning as Matthew Martir-Tullock found first base off of a walk. With a courtesy runner in place, the runner stole second and the stole third but was unable to make it home. The game went to the eighth inning with neither team being able to score until the ninth inning when the Rams turned it on and scored three runs.

Peyton Mullins, Houston Nicks and Patrick Usher scored for the Rams to give Starmount a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Elkin was able to put one runner on base but failed to bring him around the bases. At the end of the ninth inning, Starmount earned its second conference win with a 5-2 win over the Buckin’ Elks.

With the loss, Elkin moves to 1-6 overall and 2-0 in the MVAC. The Rams move to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
