BOONE — Let the games begin at Millennium Charter Academy. The Lions traveled to Boone on Saturday for the school’s first-ever cross-country meet, the Pioneer Class of Classes Cross Country Invitational hosted by Watauga High School.
MCA in Mount Airy has both a middle school and a high school team as it enters the world of interscholastic competition in the sport, and had six girls and three boys competing at the middle school level and three girls and a boy running for the high school unit
Coach Rodney King stated that a total of 20 runners are part of the team, including five at the high school level, but not all of them were ready to compete in the first meet.
In the middle school girls’ race, sixth-grader Martina Banas finished first with a time of 15:23. Martina’s older sister, Ana Banas, led a pack of MCA runners with her seventh-place finish. Sisters Ana and Sara Windsor, along with Mary Jones, finished eighth, ninth, and 10th, respectively. Cameron Shaw finished 12th.
With all of MCA’s middle school girl runners finishing in the top 10, the Lady Lions were able to claim the overall team victory in the school’s first-ever middle school girls’ meet.
In the middle school boys’ race, seventh-grader Cooper Motsinger finished third with at time of 12:37. The boys did not have enough runners to compete as a team, however, and neither did either of Millennium’s high school contingents.
