The Yadkin County 9-year-old all-stars placed second at the Boone Tournament at Appalachian State and the State Tournament at Fall Creek.
The team lost the first game to the eventual tournament champions, South Buncombe, in the Boone tournament. Yadkin all-stars then went on to win four games in two days to get back to the championship game. They weren’t able to overcome South Buncombe for a second time, and ending up placing second in the tournament. After the second place win, the all-stars will be heading to the South East Regional in Roanoke Rapids on July 13.
Earlier this month, the team went to the state tournament at Fall Creek Elementary School where it also placed second. The all-stars started the tournament on a roll and won their first three games beating MARA, North Piedmont, and Waxhaw. In the championship game, they played Waxhaw, who had come through the loser’s bracket to get back to the championship of the National Bracket.
Waxhaw took the first game 6-3. Yadkin had one game to win to get to the championship or go home for the season. The team played Waxhaw for the second game, and won 6-2. This game qualified the team for the South East Regional. The championship game saw Yadkin play South Charlotte.
The all-stars got off to a bad start, as they went behind 5-0 in the first inning. The team battled back and had it tied up in the fifth inning, 5-5. South Charlotte scored one run in the top of the seventh to make the score, 6-5. Yadkin had a chance to tie the game on a close call at the plate, but the runner was called out and the game ended on a strikeout.
