BOONVILLE — Starmount tennis and soccer standout Amber Hurst signed with Guilford College on Wednesday afternoon. Hurst has been a driving force for the Starmount tennis and soccer team for four years. She has signed to play both sports at Guilford College starting in the fall of 2016.
Coach Dale Draughn recalls what he values most about Amber: “First of all, Amber is an all around athlete. She not only excels on the soccer field, but also in the classroom. Her tireless work ethic in practice and on game days have helped us achieve where we are today. She had a good head for the game of soccer and a vast knowledge which she puts to use daily. She is a team oriented player, who puts her teammates before her self.
“Amber has shown the ability to manage school, responsibility and participation in athletics to the best of her ability and does it with a smile and does not complain. While at SHS Amber has played many positions but I think she finally found a home as the anchor of our defensive unit this season. She it the type of player who will do anything to ensure the success of the team.
“She is very team oriented and I have fussed at her many times about how she needs to be selfish and take the ball to goal but instead she looks to set up a teammate for a shot. I expect to hear great things from Amber in the future. She has the ability to be anything that she wants to as well as the intelligence to do it. I wish her the best of luck next season at Guildford College. She has some pretty big shoes to fill and she will be greatly missed next spring when we take the field.”
Amber has lead her team to the 2016 1A state playoffs this season. The team won Saturday night’s game against Elkin to advance to the third round of the playoffs.
