BOONVILLE — The Starmount Lady Rams soccer team continued its winning ways as it defeated the Lady Vikings of North Wilkes by a score of 5-0.
“I am always a little worried about Monday games as they have not practiced since Thursday or Friday of the previous week,” Coach Dale Draughn said. “We played very well overall as a team and I saw some nice combinations and passing against a tough North Wilkes team. We are focusing on what we do best and playing good solid defense.”
Starmount dominated possession and had several chances but North Wilkes played well, until the 11:37 mark when Diana Flores was taken down in the box by a Viking defender to earn the Lady Rams a PK. Amber Hurst stepped up the task and scored on a low shot to the left corner for a 1-0 lead. That would be the lone goal during the first half, with the Rams up 1-0. At the half, the Lady Rams honored their two senior players Diana Flores and Amber Hurst.
After the halftime ceremony, the Lady Rams listened to Draughn’s speech after the Senior Night activities and played up to their potential. The Rams’ Emily Mendenhall scored the first goal of the second half off the assist of Maggie Freed with 35:11 to go in the game. Then Diana Flores recorded the first of her three second half goals with 29:17 in the game off the assist of Sierra Casstevens. Flores would score again off the assist of Claire Maske with 18:39 remaining and her final goal came off the Senior combo as Amber Hurst fed Flores for her hat trick goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game.
“Courtney Byrd and the defense have been very strong for us the past few games and I hope they continue that trend through this week and into next week. We have to focus on one game at a time and continue to play up to our potential for the entire game,” said Draughn. “I am pleased with how we are progressing as a team and what we are accomplishing along the way.”
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when the host the Lady Cardinals of East Wilkes in a make up game from last Friday. The Rams then hit the road on Friday as they travel to West Wilkes. The win improves the Lady Rams’ overall record to 10-6 and their conference record to 6-4.
