WILKESBORO — The Wilkes Central Eagles used a strong first half performance to stake a 2-0 lead at the half against the Lady Rams of Starmount. The Rams cut into the lead into the second half with 28:35 remaining on a goal by Emily Mendenhall off the assist of Diana Flores.

The Eagles added an insurance goal 10 minutes later for a 3-1 lead. The Rams did not go away quietly as they continued to play hard and work together and cut into the Eagles lead with 2 minutes remaining off a free kick from Izzy Najera for the final score of 3-2.

“Against all conference teams we are going to have to play two solid halves of soccer. We did a good job against Surry Central the other night of playing two halves,” Rams Head Coach Dale Draughn said. “Tonight we did not [play both halves] but we had chances and we need to take advantage of our opportunities.”

“We have to watch the tape and work on the basics and do what we do best,” said Draughn of his team’s performance. “We have a tough week this week, since we play back-to-back and then have Ashe County on Friday, but we have to play.”

The Lady Eagles out-shot the Lady Rams by a count of 14 to 5. Lady Rams keeper Courtney Byrd recorded 11 saves in goal.

“We have to continue to work and play to the best of our abilities in the future,” Draughn said. “From all games from here on out, we have to continue to be successful and compete.”
