In the first of two cross-county rivalry games, the Elkin Buckin’ Elks and the East Wilkes Cardinals battled through seven innings before the Elks took home an 8-4 victory.
The first inning saw the Cardinals load the bases with only one out, and Zachary Lovette up the bat. Lovette hit the ball up the middle towards Elkin pitcher Will Altemueller, who made the stop and got the out at home. The Elks got out of the top of the first inning with no runs allowed. The bottom of the second inning was a different story for the Cardinals. They allowed the Elks to score two runs off of a double by Matt Martir-Tullock to bring in Eli Brown and Hayden Brooks. After one complete inning Elkin put two runs on the board to make the score 2-0.
It didn’t take long for Elkin to add additional runs as it added two more runs in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the second, Jackson Carter hit the ball to the Cardinals shortstop to earn a single and bring home another run to make the score 3-0. The final run of the inning was scored by Eli Brown, who stole home after a throwing error by East Wilkes and make the score 4-0.
In the third inning, with a runner on first and two outs, Altemueller stepped up to the plate. Altemueller found the perfect pitch and hit the ball towards right field. The ball flew over the right fielders head and kept going to fly over the fence for a home run to bring in two runs and make the score 6-0
It took East Wilkes five innings until the Cards found themselves with a run. Alec Anderson found himself at the plate with Grant Bare on third and two outs. Anderson hit the ball up the middle towards center field to earn a single and bring Bare across home plate. This would be the only run East Wilkes would score until the top of the seventh inning.
Elkin kept its hits going during the bottom of the fifth, as it scored two more runs to make the score 8-1. With Cory Wiles on second, Tanner Edwards stepped up to the plate and took a page from Altemueller’s book as he smashed the ball over the left field fence to earn himself a home run.
East Wilkes wasn’t going to let Elkin get away with an easy win, as it started to make a comeback in the top of the seventh. Anderson stepped up to the plate again and brought home two runners, Bare and Bryce Vestal, with a double to left field to make the score 8-3. With the intent to steal third, Anderson found himself stealing home as well after a throwing error by Elkin to make the score 8-4. Unfortunately for East Wilkes, it couldn’t find the remaining five runs needed to win the game. After seven innings, the Elks came away with the 8-4 win over its conference rival, East Wilkes.
With the win, Elkin moves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the MVAC Conference. East Wilkes moves to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the MVAC Conference.
