Coming off of a dominating win over Starmount, the Elkin Lady Elks were looking to keep their momentum going with a win against Wilkes Central. On Tuesday night, they did just that, as they edged past the Eagles 1-0 to earn another conference win.
Elkin pitcher Aspen Shaw had three strikeouts for the night, and made several other key plays throughout the game to give the Elks the win. Shaw wasn’t the only one with a great game for the Elks; she had the help of shortstop Kirstan Beaver. Beaver logged several outs for the Elks and came up big in the top of the sixth inning as she got all three outs for the Elks. Beaver wasn’t just on fire in the field; she came away with the only run of the night in the fifth inning to give the Elks a 1-0 lead.
Beaver was the lead-off batter in the top of the fifth when she earned a double with her hit to left field. With Beaver on second, Reagan Parks stepped up to the plate and hit the ball to second. Parks was thrown out at first, but she moved Beaver to third and with one out, she was in perfect scoring position.
With Bayle Wood up to bat, she knew her job was to bring in Beaver to get the Elks on the board. Wood flew out to left field, but she did what she had to do to earn herself an RBI and bring in Beaver to give the Elks the lead. From there, the Elks played their best defense possible to keep the Eagles at zero through the next two innings. At the end of the seventh, the Elks came away with the 1-0 win.
The win moves Elkin to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the MVAC. The Elks will try to keep their win streak alive as they face East Wilkes on Thursday night in a conference showdown. Results were not available at press time.
