Elkin vs. Surry Central
The Elkin Lady Elks battled through eight innings on Wednesday night before falling to Surry Central 4-3.
Elkin got on the board early in the first inning with the first run scored by Kirstan Beaver. Surry Central tied it up in the top of the third, but Nicole Collins gave the Elks the lead back in the bottom of the third. In the top of the seventh, Surry Central battled back to earn two runs, making the score 3-2.
Going into the bottom of the seventh, the Elks weren’t going down without a fight. The Elks started off strong when Reagan Parks found first base off of her hit to shortstop, then Bayle Wood walked to put the tying run on second. Casey Matthews was up next for the Elks but as she flew out to the outfield, she moved the runners to second and third. With two outs and the tying run on third, Mackenzie Tilley stepped up to the plate with a look of determination on her face. When the Surry pitcher wound up for her pitch the catcher fumbled the ball, which gave Parks the perfect opportunity to steal home and tie the game. At the end of seven, the Elks had battled back to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the eighth, Surry Central came away with a run on a pitcher’s error to give them the 4-3 lead. The Elks tried to battle back again, but they fell short.
