Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office deputies have charged Robert Dale Ellis, 40, of Hamptonville with failing to register as a sex offender in North Carolina and with possession of a firearm by a felon.
Deputies received information regarding an unregistered sex offender living in the Hamptonville area, according to a sheriff’s office press release. The Sheriff’s Office was contacted, but the US Marshal’s office in the Greensboro district and offered assistance in the investigation of possible federal charges of the suspect.
Yadkin County detectives and the US Marshal Service discovered Ellis had been residing in Hamptonville and had not registered as a sex offender with the Sheriff’s Office, according to the release. He was, however, registered in Michigan.
Bill Stafford of the US Marshal’s Middle District of North Carolina said, “The arrest of this non-compliant sex offender from out of state is a prime example of how pooling the resources of federal and local enforcement can net great results. This joint investigation with Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office was very successful.”
The press release said the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office will be in consultation with the federal law enforcement regarding charging Ells with criminal violations of federal law.
Ellis is under a $15,000 secure bond.
