Pittsburg Glass Works (PGW) has been working on renovations in the old Candle Crop building for the last three months, and now the company is hiring three new salaried positions.
PGW recently advertised openings for an environmental health and safety officer, a process engineer and quality assurance manager.
“So far we’ve hired salaried positions,” said PGW Human Resources Manager Bryan Shaw. “We will continue to hire as we go forward throughout the fourth quarter.”
Many hourly employees will need computer skills. Mandatory classes are offered at the Surry Community College Elkin Center for hourly applicants.
Renovations to the PGW building are all internal, and there are no plans to build on to the building. It currently is not expected that additional water and sewer lines will have to be added.
“Right now we are removing the mezzanine and doing some structural work,” Shaw said. “We will continue with the renovations with painting, flooring, lighting and electrical work.”
The renovations are primarily being done by local providers and contractors such as Advantage Machinery of Yadkinville and Garanco of Pilot Mountain, he said.
The business is slated to open in 2013 and to bring about 260 jobs to the area. Elkin was chosen over 300 or 400 other possible sites for the business to be built.
“For small towns, this was a huge win for us,” Economic Development Director Leslie Schlender told the Tribune in May. “There aren’t a lot of these big manufacturing moves happening. A company of this caliber has put us on the map and will bring awareness for further spin-off projects.”
Candle Wyck Lane was also renamed PGW Drive at the end of August. The facility is located near the current Frontier Natural Gas building.
