Former Buckin’ Elk football players and friends from the 1960s got together May 3 and 4 at Cedarbrook Country Club for their annual golf reunion.
The tradition began about 15 years ago when Deane Hall, Bud Grissom, Peegie Wagoner and John Anderson planned a golf outing in Elkin. The four are members of Elkin’s 1968 undefeated AAA state championship team, coached by John Charles.
Over the years, interest grew, and the group expanded to include other former Buckin’ Elk football players from the 1960s, and their friends.
Deane Hall continues to coordinate the event.
This year’s fun began Friday afternoon with a little friendly competition on the links, during which one player was heard to say after striking a drive about 260 yards down the middle: “Where’d it go? White lightening has ruined my far vision!”
That evening, Cedarbrook’s Zim Zimmerman and staff catered drinks and dinner. Elk Pharmacy’s owner Larry Irwin updated the group on local news and developments.
Ron Hooper, assistant coach of the 1968 team, and David Maxwell spearheaded the evening’s (true/false) reminiscences and tales.
The weekend concluded with another round of golf Saturday morning. Attending, from as far away as Texas and Florida, were John Anderson, John Atkinson, Tim Byrd, brothers Rick and Ed Callaway, Steve Dunn, brothers Bud and Richard Grissom (coach of four EHS state championship teams), brothers Dan and Deane Hall, Billy Harris, Gwyn Harris, Danny Hayes, Ron Hooper, James Irion, Larry Irwin, Don Kirk, Mac McNeill, brothers Jon and David Maxwell, Sam Mounce, Ricky Swain, and Peegie Wagoner (whose dad Harold honored the group with a surprise visit Saturday morning).
Notably absent was temporarily “gimpy friend” Marty Tilley, who sent regrets and wished the group “good scores, good food, and cold beverages - not necessarily in that order.”
Many expressed their pride and good fortune in being associated with Elkin, its friendly, talented and supportive community, and Elkin High School, where the emphasis was on excellence.
