$6.6 million allocated to resurface roads in Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes

N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti awarded a contract to resurface 48.2 miles of roads, including a stretch of U.S. 421, U.S. 601 Business, N.C. 18, N.C. 104 and 14 sections of secondary roads throughout Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

A $6.6 million contract was awarded to Carl Rose & Sons Inc. of Elkin. Work can begin as early as Oct. 29 and must be completed by June 28, 2013.

The following roads in Surry County will be resurfaced:

4.9 miles of N.C. 104 in Mount Airy from N.C. 103 to the Virginia state line;

3.9 miles of Siloam Road southeast of Dobson from Ararat Road to N.C. 268;

3.8 miles of U.S. 601 Business in Dobson from U.S. 601, though the town and back onto U.S. 601;

3.3 miles of N.C. 89 east of Mount Airy from Slate Mountain Road to the Stokes County line;

1.6 miles of Old U.S. 601 north of Dobson from Piney Grove Road to Cadle Ford Road; and

0.9 miles of Springs Road in Mount Airy from North Main Street to Mount View Drive.

The following roads in Wilkes County will be resurfaced:

5 miles of U.S. 421 South east of North Wilkesboro from N.C. 115 to the end of the on-ramp at Windy Gap Road;

5 miles of N.C. 18 through McGrady and Halls Mill from Mulberry Road to Longbottom Road;

4.5 miles of Yellow Banks Road in Mulberry from N.C. 18 to Elledge Mill Road/Traphill Road, including the roundabout;

0.6 miles of Wood Wallace Drive in Hays from Airport Road to Wilkes County Airport;

0.2 miles of the U.S. 421 South off-ramp (Exit 277) in Antioch from U.S. 421 South to Windy Gap Road/Oakley Ridge Road;

0.1 mile of U.S. 421 South on-ramp (Exit 277) in Antioch from Windy Gap Road/Oakley Ridge Road to U.S. 421 South.

The following roads in Yadkin County will be resurfaced:

3.8 miles of Courtney Huntsville Road in Huntsville from Watkins Road to the Forsyth County line;

3.7 miles of U.S. 421 North west of Yadkinville from U.S. 601 to the South Deep Creek bridge;

3.7 miles of U.S. 421 South west of Yadkinville from U.S. 601 to the South Deep Creek bridge;

3 miles of Swan Creek Road north of Cycle from Clingman Road to Old U.S. 421;

2.9 miles of Center Road southeast of Jonesville from Bryant Road to Fall Creek Church Road;

0.9 miles of Nebo Road in Union Grove from Neal Road to N.C. 67;

0.6 miles of Neal Road in Union Grove from Union Grove Church Road to Forbush Road;

0.5 mile of U.S. 421 North on-ramp (Exit 259) in Yadkinville from Reavis Road to U.S. 421 North;

0.4 mile of U.S. 421 North on-ramp (Exit 257) in Yadkinville from U.S. 601 to U.S. 421 North;

0.4 mile of U.S. 421 South on-ramp (Exit 259) in Yadkinville from Reavis Road to U.S. 421 South;

0.3 mile of U.S. 421 South off-ramp (Exit 259) in Yadkinville from U.S. 421 South to Reavis Road;

0.3 mile of U.S. 421 North off-ramp (Exit 259) in Yadkinville from U.S. 421 North to Reavis Road; and

0.2 mile of U.S. 421 South off-ramp (Exit 257) in Yadkinville from U.S. 421 South to U.S. 601.

Resurfacing these sections of roadway will extend the lifespan of the pavement, improve safety and provide a smoother ride for motorists.

This is one of 14 contracts totaling $100.8 million awarded by Conti in September for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 11.3 percent, or $12.8 million, below NCDOT estimates.
